About the Event

Gumbo Gala is an annual outdoor event that benefits Episcopal Place, which provides affordable and safe housing and essential programs for low-income seniors and disabled adults. The 12th annual Gumbo Gala will take place April 22, 2017, at Sloss Furnace, National Historic Landmark in Birmingham. Chef Jim Smith, executive chef for the State of Alabama and a 2016 Top Chef celebrity is the 2017 Gumbo Gala Honorary Chair. Gumbo Gala's primary activity is a gumbo cooking contest. Over 50 teams comprised of teen teams, backyard and professional chefs vie to be chosen the best in several categories and win prizes. A team of expert judges decides the winners each year. All Gala-goers have the unsurpassed opportunity to sample each of the cook teams' gumbo and cast their votes for the People's Choice Award. This is a family event and includes "Pogo's Playground", a children's play area: "Vieux Carre," souvenirs including a photo booth and caricaturists; the "Fais Do Do Stage" featuring Zydeco bands and Cajun dancing; a "Muskrat Art Ramble" including all types of art and fine crafts; the best of Birmingham's food trucks; ice cold beverage vendors and a "Beer Tasting Garden;" and Lagniappe --Cajun for "a little something extra!"
